About Dorsal

Enjoy this sailing season with our unrivaled sails and canvas.

Team Dorsal is a multitalented crew who are all as capable designing in AutoCAD or cutting on the CNC cutting machine, as they are sewing.

Building on a long history of serving the Great Lakes boating community, DORSAL, LLC (aka Door Sail) is your full service sail loft & canvas shop, capable of computer assisted Sail design & cutting, as well as being fully invested in digital 3D modeling to design and cut custom Biminis, Dodgers, Full Enclosures, Sail & Boat Covers of all sort and even Upholstery work for the cockpit and down below.

Charles Klein is the founder and owner of Dorsal LLC.  He is a Wisconsin native with 4 decades of experience in sailing and sailmaking. He built his first boat and sails when he was 12, started racing while at UW Oshkosh.  After he and his wife rebuilt a 40 year old wooden Phil Rhodes 25 foot sloop, they moved aboard and headed for the Florida Keys and the Bahamas.

As their son was added to the crew, he designed and built a 36' sharpie schooner on which they lived and cruised the length of the eastern seaboard 5 times over 8 years, going as far south as Georgetown Exumas and as far north as Maine, before returning to the Great Lakes in 1998.  Along the way he worked in a variety of sail lofts, boatyards and cabinet shops.  After a stint at Palmer Johnson's as an AutocCAD draftsman in the interior design office, he started Dorsal in 2000.

He is still an active windsurfer and kiteboarder, and he and his wife race their typhoon most weeks of the season

Amy has many talents, but is an especially talented upholsterer. If you are looking to make your interior or cockpit more comfortable and attractive, she can make it happen. But don't mess with her. She has a staple gun and is not afraid to use it.

Adam grew up sailing with his Dad and is now a kiteboarder as well. You might see him at the marinas helping with installations.

Nancy has a passion for sewing and has been doing it as long as she can remember. She can put life into old canvas or create new. She moved to Door County in the mid 90's and enjoys spending the summers sailing in Baileys Harbor.
